Lounge

Dan Groll told me about this lounge/reading room in the Div School. I spent a pleasant afternoon in here reading for the philosophy of mind workshop. There were some Div school students hanging out in the room, but the layout of the room isn't really conducive to serious hanging out. It's more a place to read the paper and maybe take a nap.


I'm warming up to the new department lounge, even though it's lack of windows is a serious flaw, and I know it will feel more claustrophobic when the weather gets nice. Part of what's nice about it is that it can be turned into a grad-students-only bunker when the doors are shut.




The new lounge is obviously still not nearly as fun as the old Anscombe Lounge, which was always unbelievably messy and eveything was covered in dust. And people would smoke in there.

Free Trade Coffee

Coffee canisters in the Divinity School coffee shop. As you can see, the coffee on the right is "Organic/Fair Trade Coffee". A cup of the Fair Trade coffee costs about 25¢ more than regular. I think the regular actually tastes better than the Fair Trade. All of my attempts to order the regular coffee by calling it "Free Trade" have failed, resulting in the clerks charging me as if I ordered the Fair Trade kind.

Div School Library

When I was an undergrad, I thoroughly explored my college campus, in search of secluded places to study. I did find a cool library, the Kennedy Bioethics Library, in the Healy building. For whatever reason, I haven't really looked around Chicago for a similar spot, even though I've been here for five years. Last night, I was walking around campus without anything to do. I walked into the Seminary Co-op building, and decided to climb the stairs leading up the chapel. The chapel was closed, but down a paneled hallway, lined with portraits, I could see a spiral staircase and what looked like a library. I asked the girls working at the desk of the co-op what was upstairs. They said that it was the Div School library. Maybe a good place to get some thinking done?
