Late Night Walk Home

Walking west on 55th Street to Kimbark.

Robie House from Above

There is an underused patio on the second floor of the new business school. You have to walk through the lobby of an office, past the gaze of the secretary, but it's worth it. You get a great view of the Robie House and the Theological Seminary.

Chimes Night at the Tombs

If you want a concentrated dose of life at Georgetown, go to the Tombs restaurant and bar on a Thursday night, when the university's a capella group, the Chimes, and their Jesuit mentor, Fr. Walsh, perform.

The Car Barn

Georgetown's least impressively named building: the Car Barn. Home to the graduate center of the School of Business.

Myopic Books

Stumbled on a decent used bookstore while going to get my hair cut near the Damen el stop. Picked up a copy of the Dreyfus & Dreyfus Mind over Machine, which has been on my to-get list for a few years.

A Night at the Opera

Melody and I went to see Cosi fan tutte at the Lyric Opera last night. If I was quicker with the camera, I would have documented the fur protest outside the entrance to the theater. The protesters know their audience--there were several acres of fur walking around, even though it was probably 40 degrees out last night.

Recruitment

Grad student recruitment is about to start up again in the philosophy department. This is one of the most hectic times of the year. The chair pictured above was broken in the aftermath of last year's recruitment effort, and is only now being retired from active use.

Lounge

Dan Groll told me about this lounge/reading room in the Div School. I spent a pleasant afternoon in here reading for the philosophy of mind workshop. There were some Div school students hanging out in the room, but the layout of the room isn't really conducive to serious hanging out. It's more a place to read the paper and maybe take a nap.

I'm warming up to the new department lounge, even though it's lack of windows is a serious flaw, and I know it will feel more claustrophobic when the weather gets nice. Part of what's nice about it is that it can be turned into a grad-students-only bunker when the doors are shut.

The new lounge is obviously still not nearly as fun as the old Anscombe Lounge, which was always unbelievably messy and eveything was covered in dust. And people would smoke in there.

Wicked Validation

When Jay saw this sign, in the window of the parking garage where Christa had her car parked, he was baffled. Instead of reading it as saying that the garage accepted validation from the play Wicked, he thought it was possibly written by someone from Boston to indicate that the garage had a kind of superlative validation.
