Kehoe Field

Kehoe field is an astroturf field at the far southern side of the Georgetown campus. The domed building in the background is Georgetown's old observatory.

The Leavey Center's Rooftop Plaza

This space is located three stories above ground.

Georgetown's Leavey Center, an unremarkable, if not ugly, late-80s combination of student center, hotel, and parking garage, has one redeeming feature: its rooftop plaza. And almost no one uses it, or even knows it's there. You reach it by walking through unmarked fire doors and climbing up two flights of steps that reek of cigarette smoke--workers and students obviously retreat into the stairwell for a quick smoke when they don't want to go outside. When you reach the third floor, you discover a deserted collection of lawns, an arbor, and brick walkways, with views of the main campus to the east and north and the hospital to the west.

Georgetown Library Steps

This is the gloomy entrance to campus. The steps lead to Georgetown's Lauinger Library.

The Seal of Georgetown University

The seal of Georgetown University, in mosaic form in the central entrance to Healy Hall. If you observe people coming and going from this entrance, you'll notice that almost no one steps on the seal. When I was an undergrad, the superstition was that stepping on the seal meant you wouldn't graduate.

The barely legible text around the edge of the oval reads: Collegium Georgiopolitanum Ad Ripas Potomaci in Marylandia: Georgetown College on the Banks of the Potomac in Maryland. There's more information about the seal here.

The eagle in the center of the seal is holding a globe (which looks like a bird cage) in one claw, and a cross in the other claw. That always struck me as a gesture of agression rather than respect.

National Reference Center for Bioethics Literature: Georgetown Bioethics Library

The Bioethics Library in Georgetown's Healy building is the most pleasant place to study on Georgetown's campus. Most of the time, I am the only person in there besides the librarians.

Chimes Night at the Tombs

If you want a concentrated dose of life at Georgetown, go to the Tombs restaurant and bar on a Thursday night, when the university's a capella group, the Chimes, and their Jesuit mentor, Fr. Walsh, perform.

The Car Barn

Georgetown's least impressively named building: the Car Barn. Home to the graduate center of the School of Business.
